Hello from Iowa. I am currently a Utah ccw instructor, it's been very popular in Iowa as this permit allows Iowans to carry in Minnesota and Missiouri. I am also an NRA instructor in multiple disiplines and teach some more advanced non-NRA courses. I help out my sheriff department's new reserve deputies in firearms training and hope to teach the ccw course for civilians in the future.

I am a moderator on a site that is working to change Iowa's 'may-issue' to 'shall-issue'. We have about 1/2 of the 99 county sheriff's that do issue permits to civilians but the other half either won't issue or restrict the permit to the point of uselessness. http://www.iowacarry.org is the site with the forum being the focal point. We've been around for about 3 years, only 2 legislative sessions and we've gone a long way. This year is looking pretty good for a change.

One of our platforms for the law change is standardized training. Right now there are 99 different county sheriff's issuing permits 99 different ways with 99 different training standards. Some have great training some would make you sick.

We at Iowacarry.org have been discussing the idea of creating an Iowa organization of instructors to help the training standard devopment and give the idea some credability. Maybe this is a better avenue?

Thanks
Sieve.

Sieve,

Anything we can do to help, just let us know. Utah and AZ have started to requiring all instructors being NRA basic pistol and home defense instructors (or LE POST instructors) I think this this is an attempt to standardize the courses that the instructors are trained on and therefore standardizing the training. Even though both AZ and UT have a required class outline. However I do know that UT uses the NRA instructor data base to keep up with the instructors certification. You must keep your NRA certification current to stay certified as a UT Instructor.

However we would love to help in the fight to make Iowa a shall issue state and will provide any assistance you might need. Email me at info@ncfia.net and let me know what we can do.

Thank you for the offer. I'll keep members here posted and maybe if we get the law changed Iowa will start to accept other states carry permits. I wouldnt' hold my breath though. Iowa currently acknowledges no other state's permits. Our state government just doesn't play nice with other states I guess. Reciprocity and 'Stand your Ground' laws will be our next battle.
